The origins of the Mazarine Library are linked to the personal collections of Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661), successor to Richelieu and principal minister of the minority of Louis XIV between 1643 and 1661. Open to scholars from 1643 in Mazarin's private mansion (which would later become the historic site of the National Library of France), it is the oldest public library in France. Since then, it has continued to develop its resources, thanks to a documentary policy mainly oriented towards historical disciplines, and by benefiting from legal deposit and often significant donations. Attached in 1945 to the Institut de France, which has occupied the buildings of the former Collège des Quatre-Nations since 1805, the Mazarine is one of the libraries of major literary and scientific establishments under the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Its reading room, restored from 1968 to 1974, perpetuates the unique decor of a large 17th-century library . The Mazarine is today, more than three hundred and fifty years after its foundation, a true book museum and a study and research library, still open to all.
